Dynamic Mini-Lessons for Teaching Writing

Back to Upcoming Workshops

Writing Workshop Overview

Everyone says they teach writing through “mini-lessons…” but what is a mini-lesson really? In this practical one-day workshop, Kristina Smekens identifies the characteristics of a powerful writing mini-lesson and then shows participants how to integrate key components into a single 10-15 minute whole-class presentation. Beyond delivery of the lesson, participants will also learn how to identify priority skills to teach per grade level.

Training Topics:
  • Learn the four-step rhythm to an effective writing mini-lesson.
  • Understand the components that make a mini-lesson more visual, concrete, and engaging.
  • Recognize the different ways to utilize literature or exemplar writing within a 10-minute mini-lesson.
  • Understand the developmental progression that occurs within a 3-5 day mini-lessons series.
  • Learn how to integrate the 6 Traits into writing mini-lessons.
  • Recognize how the mini-lesson springboards into independent writing time.
  • Participate in a mock classroom where you experience live, modeled mini-lessons.

When you leave you’ll be able to:
  • Create engaging lessons that target the many different learning styles within your classroom.
  • Identify which mini-lesson skills to teach based on the type of writing you are targeting.
  • Build a multi-day mini-lesson series that guides students toward independence.
  • Develop mini-lessons that transition into effective independent writing time.
  • Organize your writing lessons in an efficient manner for quick access.
  • Build a writing rubric that holds students accountable for new skills taught.
  • Execute Kristina’s 10 newest writing lessons.
