This is the ideal workshop for those who are charged with the task of providing 6-Traits training and on-going support for in-district teachers. Participants will not just receive valuable information; they will also have time to apply it to their own unique school situations. This workshop utilizes a hands-on, interactive clinic approach.
Pre-Requisite:
Participants must have previously attended the one-day workshops entitled “6-Traits of Writing – An Introduction” and “I Know the 6-Traits – Now What?” led by Kristina Smekens.
Training topics
• To be a 6-Traits expert in the building/district, you have to know your content. Participants will assess their level of knowledge on the 6 Traits to ensure it is deep enough.
• Beyond knowing the content, a literacy coach has to understand the coaching process. Kristina will reveal methods for participants to guide teachers toward 6-Trait implementation and independence when teaching writing.
• Writing coaches face common issues as they work with a range of willing and not so willing teachers. Workshop time will be spent developing responses to tough teacher questions.
• Learn tips & tricks for demonstrating strong mini-lessons via classroom modeling. This will include how to set-up modeling opportunities, how to execute the model in the classroom, and how to debrief afterwards with the teachers who observed..
• Having resources at your fingertips is essential. Identify systems of organization to make yourself a more effective and efficient coach for your teachers.
When you leave, you will be able to:
Design on-going trainings for your teachers that ultimately lead them to consistent 6-Traits implementation
Develop a new teacher orientation of the 6-Trait essentials that new teachers need to know at the beginning of every school year
Answer the “hard questions” teachers ask about fitting writing in, organizing their writing curriculum, working with reluctant writers, differentiating writing for students, connecting reading and writing, and much more
Organize your training materials to help support teachers from all grade-levels
Model mini-lessons in the classroom as a means of training teachers in teaching writing
Direct your teachers to fabulous web sites and resources to support their 6-Trait teaching
