Trait assessment for writing

6 traits stamperIf you’re using the 6 traits to teach writing, are you also using the traits to assess student writing?  When we look at the standardized test writing rubrics, all the traits are there (ideas/content, organization, style — word choice, sentence fluency, and voice).  Using the traits to assess just makes sense.

With that said, I wanted to find a way to save time for teachers trying to use the traits as they grade 30 narrative essays!  My self-inking 6-traits stamper works perfectly for a quick way to put the traits in front of students with every assessment.  It works even better if you first develop a trait-based, kid-generated rubric.  Then, you can simply stamp each paper and fill in the little blanks below each trait icon with a pre-arranged number from the rubric.  Love it!
