My Three Favorite Chapter Books
For the longest time my top two favorite whole-class read alouds included Love That Dog, by Sharon Creech and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, by Kate DiCamillo. But my newest favorite was inspired by fourth grade teacher Crystal Callaway at Bailly Elementary (Chesterton, IN). It’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret, by Brian Selznick. Ever since Crystal shared it with me I’ve seen it in classrooms and heard about it in schools all over the place. This book is AMAZING!
More than 500 pages long, this story has more than 280 full-page, plot-moving illustrations. The students will lean in close as they try to solve the mystery and make sense of the clues. There are fabulous opportunities to teach prediction, inferencing, point of view, and so much more. You’ll love it, and more importantly, so will your students!
