Workshop Overview

In this era of high-stakes testing, it’s never been more important for students to enter into state reading assessments with the skills and confidence to be successful. This dynamic one-day workshop provides teachers from grades 3-12 with proven strategies for raising test scores by teaching students to apply a full range of reading comprehension and extended-writing response skills.

Training topics

• Recognize the key components of the typical state-assessment reading passage.
• Learn tips and tricks that will aid struggling readers.
• Recognize the value of QAR (question answer relationship) within short–answer and multiple–choice questions.
• Learn strategies for teaching students how to answer an inferential question versus a literal one.
• Understand your state rubric and the significant differences between “passing” and “not passing” the extended-response prompt.
• Learn methods to teach students how to decode a prompt so that they respond to all requirements.
• Acquire lessons and strategies that teach students to refer back to the text and cite specific evidence.

When you leave, you will be able to:

  • Execute Kristina’s Top 10 Reading Response Mini-Lessons.
  • Immediately implement classroom techniques that drive students back into the text for evidence and support.
  • Balance classroom reading assignments that include both short, one-sitting passages and longer, multi-day readings.
  • Revise textbook questions to parallel the state assessment in format and structure.
  • Build your students’ test-taking confidence with the principles of QAR (question answer relationship).
