Deepening Comprehension
with the Six Steps of Vocabulary Instruction

This strategy-rich workshop for teachers in grades K-12 is all about helping students improve comprehension by developing a deep understanding of core academic vocabulary. No more is vocabulary instruction about rote memorization. Now the emphasis is on providing students with multiple exposures to key terms so that they truly “own” content-area words. This workshop will unveil current research on teaching vocabulary while tying these findings to dozens of instructional strategies that are both practical and engaging.

Workshop Topics

  • Understand the six research-based steps to deliver effective vocabulary instruction.
  • Develop students’ listening, oral, reading, and writing vocabularies so they speak like “expert” mathematicians, scientists, historians, etc.
  • Recognize the core content words in any subject area that yield the highest probability of academic success.
  • Recognize the power of functional vocabulary used in all subjects.
  • Prioritize need-to-know words over nice-to-know words.
  • Display content-area word banks within the classroom environment.
  • Identify engaging strategies that aid students in mastering the meaning of essential terms.

When you leave, you'll be able to:

  • Teach your colleagues how to identify and align core vocabulary throughout your building/district.
  • Implement vocabulary strategies in a research-based progression from first exposure to deep understanding.
  • Utilize engaging vocabulary activities and games that work well for review and reinforcement.
  • Utilize numerous strategies for implementing age-appropriate and content-specific vocabulary notebooks.

Free follow-up training video:

  • Teachers who attend this one-day Vocabulary workshop will be given a complimentary one-month subscription to Smekens Education's matching video on webPD: Strategies for Teaching Vocabulary (K-12).
  • During the complimentary subscription period, teachers are encouraged to share access with every colleague in their school, allowing the entire staff to learn key concepts from the workshop.
