Remote Coaching by Smekens Education
Remove the roadblocks to implementation

Even the most gifted and well-intentioned educators can wrestle with how to tweak instruction, manage time differently, or launch new techniques. In fact, after participating in any professional development, the implementation challenge is always the obstacle that stands in the way of progress.

After schools and districts participate in Smekens-led professional development, they can rely on their “Remote Coach” to guide, challenge and encourage teachers through the hills and valleys of implementation.

How a Remote Coach can support teachers
1. Facilitate Implementation
A single coaching session will address questions and clarify previous training. But in order for sustainable implementation to occur, teachers need a guide that is available for the entire journey. Consequently, the Remote-Coach service is designed for short, regularly-scheduled coaching sessions with groups of 1-6 educators from the same school.

During each 20-30-minute session, the Remote Coach can engage teachers in focused conversations to celebrate progress, address questions, and plan next steps. To optimize participation, schools are encouraged to commit to a minimum of 10 hours of remote coaching during one school year.

2. Demonstrate best-practice mini-lessons
Follow-up consultation with a Smekens remote coach begins with quality conversations. But after the relationship has started, it can be solidified further when the remote coach visits the school in person to offer face-to-face support.

During an on-site v
isit, the remote coach can spend time in classrooms modeling instruction and providing real-time feedback for teachers. This add-on option offers a powerful way to engage teachers and enhance the potential for implementation.

3. Offer one-on-one feedback
After developing a solid, trusting relationship with their Smekens remote coach, teachers are welcome to submit video recordings of themselves delivering a Smekens strategy in their own classrooms.

The remote coach then provides targeted one-on-one feedback about the lesson, acknowledging what went well and offering tips and tricks on how to make the lesson even better.  This non-evaluative function of the remote coach is one of the most effective tools for achieving implementation.

Ongoing support beyond the initial training

Our goal is to help teachers succeed in the classroom with a clear understanding of how to teach reading and writing. That's why we are committed to providing a deep level of support beyond the initial professional development.

Hear what others are saying about the support of the Smekens team:

"Bridget’s passion for working with teachers is evident in everything she does. Implementing new strategies, looking at data to drive instruction, and providing meaningful feedback to teachers are just a few of the ways she has helped me grow as an instructional leader.”
Ashley Stahl, Instructional Coach at Redding Elementary, Seymour, IN

"Smekens Education not only provides top-notch training experiences but also continues to provide support long after the training is over. Knowing that I can get in contact with the team and expect quick, reliable responses is invaluable. Thank you for going above and beyond the call of duty!” Kristin Smith, teacher at Gilmer County High School, Glenville, WV

"It is remarkable to know that when I have questions or need help refining new strategies after the PD has ended, Smekens always responds to meet my needs with a personal touch.” Maureen Hoffman-Wehmeier, teacher at Greenwood Middle School, Greenwood, IN

“We have had the honor of attending Smekens Education workshops for four years. Beginning this school year, we engaged with them to deliver onsite professional learning and coaching. This collaboration has been so beneficial to our teachers and leaders because the learning was tailored to each school’s needs.” Charlene Ball, Assistant Superintendent at Covington Independent Public Schools, Covington, KY

How long does each coaching session last?

How long does each coaching session last?

A typical coaching session will last between 20 and 30 minutes. During the session, the Remote Coach can engage teachers in focused conversations to celebrate progress, address questions, and plan next steps. To optimize participation, schools are encouraged to commit to a minimum of 10 hours of remote coaching during one school year.
What happens after a coaching session?

What happens after a coaching session?

After each coaching session, the Smekens Remote Coach provides participants and other select leaders with a written summary of the meeting. After detailing who attended the session and what specific topics were addressed, the summary will highlight the “next steps” teachers were challenged to execute in their own classrooms.

While there’s great value in the “face time” that teachers spend with their Smekens Remote Coach, the support doesn’t have to end when the video session is over. Teachers are welcome to email their Remote Coach between video sessions to seek clarification, ask for advice, or to share successes from their classrooms. Ongoing email support is just one of the perks involved with a Remote Coach contract.
What's the difference between a Remote Coach and a Literacy Consultant?

What's the difference between a Remote Coach and a Literacy Consultant?

While a Smekens Literacy Consultant shares a lot in common with a Smekens Remote Coach, there are distinct differences in the services these two individuals provide. Literacy consultants specialize in delivering best-practice reading and writing strategies to small groups or entire staffs. They have unique expertise in the content and are gifted at building a shared understanding of a specific training topic.

Remote Coaches are also experts in the content but specialize in helping teachers to break down what was shared by a Literacy Consultant into bite-size segments that can be implemented gradually and over time. It’s only natural for teachers to encounter challenges and questions along the way. That’s when the Remote Coach steps to provide feedback and support, using the teacher’s own curriculum and resources.

When schools work with both a Smekens Literacy Consultant who delivers customized on-site professional development and a Smekens Remote Coach who supports implementation, they can rest assured that both are working from the same playbook. The Smekens team will collaborate before, during and after each engagement to ensure that teachers are hearing a consistent message from their Literacy Consultant and Remote Coach.

What kind of technology is needed?

What kind of technology is needed for remote conferencing?

Setting up a video conferencing system is simple and inexpensive. All that is required is a broadband internet connection, a webcam with a microphone, a large monitor, and a simple speaker system. These tools, along with free software from Zoom will enable teachers and their Smekens Remote coach to see and hear one another easily.
