Within your literacy stations, include a listening center. Provide students the opportunity to hear professionals modeling fluency with the appropriate pacing, phrasing, and expression.

For the classroom teacher who doesn’t have books on CD readily available, check out these two favorite websites that include authors and actors reading aloud popular children’s literature:

Storyline Online has famous television and movie actors reading aloud popular picture books.

Charles Smith Jr. includes numerous poems written and then read by Charles R. Smith, Jr. Click on “activities” and then “hear my poems” to hear the author read aloud his own poems from books including Hoop Kings, Hoop Queens, Rimshots, The Mighty 12 Super Heroes of Greek Myth, 12 Rounds to Glory: The Muhammad Ali Story, and others.

Both sites are free and include numerous spin-off reading and writing activities, too.
