Launching the Writer’s Workshop: Grades 3-12

Regardless of the curriculum model you’re currently using, this 5-hour on-demand workshop provides you with a powerful framework of lessons that will help launch your writing year. Plot and plan your own instructional calendar as you learn about the priorities for teaching writing during the first six weeks of school. Then, by the end, you will be ready to go with a personalized blueprint in hand!

This on-demand workshop was recorded in summer 2020 and includes ways to apply workshop strategies to COVID-19 remote-learning.

Understand the four phases of the workshop launch.
Learn classroom-tested routines and procedures to establish the writing environment.
Set the tone that writing occurs daily.
Receive organizational ideas for writers’ notebooks.
Learn day-by-day strategies to introduce the 6 Traits of Writing so teachers and students are using a common language.
Balance free-choice writing topics with teacher-assigned topics.
Receive ready-to-go lessons with supporting resources, activity pages, and authentic student writing samples.
After participating in the workshop, you will be able to:
Kick off the school year with a 20-day “game plan” for teaching writing.
Establish routines to effectively manage a writer’s workshop.
Implement a writer’s notebook in the classroom.
Lead efficient and effective writing conferences with students.
Develop a classroom writing rubric that students can use and understand.
Transition from procedural lessons into the first writing unit.

Can I earn Professional Growth Credits?
With prior approval from the attendee’s school district, participants may receive credit for 5 hours of professional development for participating in this virtual workshop. After the workshop concludes, attendees will be awarded a Certificate of Participation, which can be used to verify attendance. Can I earn Graduate-Level Units?
Through a partnership with University of the Pacific, workshop attendees are eligible to pursue one, two, or three nationally-accredited graduate-level semester credits/units after this virtual event. The cost of graduate-level credit ($62 per credit/unit) is separate from the cost of attending a workshop. For more information, please contact us.
How long do I have access to the workshop videos?

When you register for this on-demand workshop, you’ll have access to the workshop videos for 30 days! In addition, you’ll receive lifetime access to the corresponding “Secret Site” with resources that will help you apply what you learn.

What is the cancellation policy?

If you have a change in plans and need to cancel your registration, please submit your request to workshops@smekenseducation.com. Cancelations and a full refund may occur at any time prior to the workshop. Upon request, substitutions may also occur when the change is made in advance of the workshop.
