Practice the Secret Spill
April 30, 2012
Nadine Gilkison, fourth grade teacher at South Creek Elementary (Indianapolis, IN), created a great test-prep video called “The Secret Spill.” The video focuses specifically on standardized testing in math.
She shares a common-sense approach to help students show what they know on the test. The simple strategy, known as “the secret spill,” encourages students to “spill” all that they know on scrap paper before they begin the test. This includes all the formulas, charts, or chants they’ve learned along the way to help solve various problems. Because students are allowed to use scrap paper for the test, this is a powerful and effective strategy.
