Ongoing Professional Learning

Foster real change with job-embedded professional development

Like students, teachers don’t become experts at executing their craft after a single lesson. It takes targeted, ongoing professional learning to develop high-performing educators.

GOING BEYOND TRAINING

Training is the first step, but progress comes with ongoing support

Too often, schools run teachers through a myriad of trainings and then expect to reap the results right away. This quick-fix approach results in short-lived initiatives that fall short of expectations.
For teachers to effectively execute after a training, they need focused, on-going learning that has the end goal of implementation.

With our comprehensive follow-up support, we help teachers apply what they’ve learned by modeling expectations, troubleshooting challenges, and celebrating successes.

A convenient way to make previous training a priority, Remote Coaching fosters implementation with customized, live coaching by webcam.

Top questions about Smekens teacher training

What does ongoing professional learning really mean?
At Smekens Education, we offer ongoing professional learning to help insure implementation of best-practice literacy strategies. Sometimes this may include multiple on-site school visits to work with small-group rotations of teachers. Other times ongoing support could include a regular coaching call to assess progress, celebrate success, and offer next steps. Regardless of the activity, our ongoing professional learning is customized at every step of the journey in order to meet the emerging needs of teachers.
Do we really need to invest in ongoing professional learning?
When schools have the flexibility to balance their spending so that an important allocation is dedicated to ongoing follow-up support, everyone wins. Without sustained professional learning tied to initial training, enthusiasm can fizzle and priorities can shift, leaving teachers discouraged and defeated.
How do other schools utilize ongoing professional learning?
Follow-up support looks different for every school based on needs, priorities, and budget. That said, many schools arrange for a combination of our services in order to sustain a yearlong (or a multi-year) emphasis on student achievement priorities. Schools may subscribe to webPD, have multiple days of on-site consulting, and support teachers between on-site visits with remote coaching. The more ongoing support that is provided, the greater likelihood that implementation will occur and achievement will improve.
