Excite Students with Summer Reading
october 25, 2010

Use the last days of school before summer to whet the appetite of your readers.
1. Brainstorm with your class a list of all the books you have read aloud this year. Then do a little Internet searching to identify other titles by the same authors.
2. Besides searching for “other books” written by a particular author, maybe you’d like to pique their interest to some new authors, too. If you can, make time to read a couple chapters from these recommended books that would introduce students to characters and gist.
3. Or read aloud a short synopsis and a pique-interest passage from the middle of the text to grab the attention of your students. (Be conscience of texts that would entice both your male and female readers.)
